My last trip to Europe was with a T81A. Bag the pre-loaded pack...grab a
BP-197 and a few sets of 2300 mAH NiMH cells...don't forget a 240v charger,
though. Or, you can grab AA alkaline cells almost anywhere...a little
wasteful, but awfully convenient!

For tone access, I just built a little audio oscillator into a rat shack
microphone, with a tiny switch on the backto enable, disable it. I used a
SMT 556 chip, ½ for the 1750, ½  for the timer, so it just whistles long
enough to bring up the repeater. I powered it with three LR-44s, but there
is enough juice coming up for the mic element to power it.

BTW...with the transmitter opened, it plays great on 4 meters!
