[Icom] 706 question

I have a question about the 706-as I am trying to
troubleshoot a problem for a friend.  If you go into
the quick menus, and set the UP/DOWN mic buttons to
work as a CW keyer, does that defeat the UP/DOWN
function in all modes, or just CW.  It seems that his
UP DOWN buttons aren't working, but I had set them up
to work as CW paddles, and am thinking that is the
problem
