Bill, let me tell you about SPAM. Hope you find this amusing. I about
laughed myself silly.

My son is a Cavalry Scout, Iraq combat veteran. He has been there from the
start. We have mailed many things to him. So far his combat losses are two
watches, 3 GPS receivers, 1 SW radio, and 1 camera. One GPS is savable, a
mortar impact concussion shattered the screen, but I was able to download
his data and upload it into the new one.

All soldiers eat MREs. Like them, maybe not. But eat or go hungry. MREs
come with a tough springy plastic spoon. The spoon is an important part of
the story.

In one of the care packages we sent him, we put in a few cans of SPAM. You
know, the spiced ground ham. It was too salty for him, but he had another
use for it. He kept an open can of Spam under his machine gun while
patrolling the roads. In some areas, they had the "bag guys" throwing rocks
at them. He didn't want to light them up with the coax-gun just for
throwing rocks. Soooo....

He would scoop up a big spoon-full of SPAM, flex the spoon, and sling-shot
the Spam at the rock-thrower. He says when they realized they were hit with
ground pork, they were out of the fight. Drop the rocks and run!

Soldiers will always improvise to find the best way of dealing with a
problem. <grin> More humane than shooting I guess.
