I must agree. Most of the "do everything" radios
perform, to a degree, less than most really expect.
When you have one radio on the bench and it goes
belly-up, you are off the air. That is a trade off
for the "convenience" of one-box operation.
Personally, I prefer something that does one thing and
does it well, and if I need more boxes to do specific
things, then that is the route I have chosen. I
wouldn't trade my 575H, 475H or 275H for any
multi-band radio on vhf/uhf. And I am still using a
Swan 500C or SBE-33/SB1-LA for low bands, although I
am considering "upgrading" to an Icom, of some kind,
for the ease and efficiency of 12 volt power. Yes, I
also subscibe to the single-band antenna theory too,
but I am fortunate enough to have the real estate to
accomodate multiple arrays. BTW, does anyone have an
Icom 375 or 1275 they would want to part with? 8~)
That's my 1.9 cents worth, due to inflation.
Greetings to all.

Yes, look what Yaesu has been doing.
I was just refunded our club's money for a pair of
FT1500M radios that
Yaesu
has had in their shop twice in 3 months and could not
get the radios to
transmit a clean signal. This is the same model that
got FANTASTIC
reviews
also.
The radios would transmit before the PLL was locked.
They would not
believe
me the first trip back to the CA service center so I
made a video of
the
radio trashing the spectrum and sent that back with
the radio.
Received it back again and it still was dirty. The
told me, "That is
the
best they can do and will refund our money"
These radios were used on APRS nodes and were keying
up services over a
5
Meg spread.
At club meeting I have set up the HP8920A and checked
members 1500Ms
and
they all are dirty if you key them rapidly as in
packet service you
will see
it spur once every 4-5 keyups.
Love my Icoms but Icom does not have the acc port that
Yaesu and Alinco
have
in their low end radios.
Got a Micor to replace the node now.... :)

I was kind of disappointed at Icom not coming out with
some new killer
radios
by Dayton. Looking at what Yaesu has been doing, it
appears that they
are
outpacing my beloved Icom. I have many, many Icoms and
dearly love
them. In
fact,
Steve, WB2WIK, ran a picture of my shack back in the
80s in the VHF
section
of CQ mag. He said my shack looked like an Icom ad. ha
ha.
Well, now I can say I have radios from nearly every
company, but it
appears
that Yaesu is marching away big-time. The new 897 and
857 are getting
fantastic
reviews, I don't understand why Icom can't take the
PROll and come out
with
a
PROlll that covers DC to daylight.
Any thoughts?
