Chris,
This thread has been going for a while so I've forgotten what radio it 
is you're trying to mount.
For you and others, especially late model Chevy truck owners, I neatly 
mounted my 706
face plate on the ashtray. 2 screws held the plastic front panel to the 
metal tray. It was
relatively simple to fasten the 706 face plate mount to the tray. I had 
to use a spacer on the
bottom to "push" the mount out so that it would not have a downward 
tilt. The remote
cable was routed through the dash making it look very "factory".  Of 
course this mounting
option assumes that you are a non smoker! 73
