It is NOT recommended to use ANY cigarette lighter output plug for a radio.
They are not designed to provide the current surge. Also, any mating plug
that plugs into these things is horrible at best. The spring material will
not handle any significant current without overheating. This increases the
DC resistance of the plug wiring, which means less to the radio.
Anything less than about 7-8A may be ok, anything over, be careful. That is
why they say..battery.
It is not necessary to go through the firewall. In my 2000 Grand Prix, I
routed the wiring back along the firewall over the fender hump, down inside
the door channel to the rear. Wiring is not visible, unless you really look
for it in the door. Only about 1.5" is really exposed inside the door
channel.
10AWG is minimum wire size. 8AWG is better. I have a 706IIg mobile, with
the LDG RT-11 tuner in the trunk. Works fine. Had to add straps from
vehicle frame to the exhausts. There was nothing for grounds.
