Hi Roy and all,

Well said, it is indeed a shame.  Probably the only thing I ever got from
MFJ that I will say is good is the 259B antenna analyzer.  I of course use
it only to make sure the antenna is properly matched to my Icom's. Gasp,
never for anything else.....

Of course I had to change the SO 239 on the analyzer before I could use it
because there were no threads on it......

I have to wonder how they tested it.  ?????????

    Isn't it ironic.  In the amateur radio buisness, companies like MFJ
survive/thrive even though their reputation is well known while companies
like Collins, Motorola and other "professional" makers of radios would no
longer get near the buisness unless they can "knock off" an existing design
for very little money.
     With MFJ, I figure you get a piece of ham equipment designed and built
by a fellow weekend warrior at appropriate prices.  Kind of like an honest
ham swapper: "Item sold as-is, but you get a free replacement if it's DOA"
(which in many cases, it is).

Some months ago, I had the occasion to post a short item about an SAS
lad on
a deep-insertion mission in the Iraqi desert, using a PRC-316 (20W
HF-SSB
manpack) to "get the message through". Now just imagine if this poor guy
had
to tinker with his radio whilst taking fire from enemy irregulars.

At least one can take comfort in the fact that the PRC-316 is the
product of
a "real" radio manufacturer. Admittedly, HM Loyal Taxpayer probably paid
more for it than he would have for a bit of MFJ kit, though.
