Been there done that.
The catch for me is that any "legitimate" revenue whether by wages or
consulting, goes into the general fund where it is spent on infrastructure,
entitlements, or welfare as defined by the legislative/executive/judicial
branch (swambo). Anything earned by covert operations (buying broken radios
and fixing them or creating things from the boneyard) can go to funding the
"skunkworks".
Then again, sometimes its more fun to be under the hood than behind the
wheel.
