Ah yes, but then there are those hams (not I; I am retired) who put that
time to work for them by doing consulting work at $100/hr. and up, so that
they can buy expensive, reliable toys which allow them to spend their
non-earning "leisure" time behind the wheel, so to speak, rather than under
the hood!

 I'll show you one.  Take any CT-17 or clone and instead of plugging the
phone plug into one radio, plug it into a Y-Cable where barrels and tips are
all connected together.  If you can understand that concept, you'll
understand that the C-IV system sits idle at +5V and any rig on the party
line simply pulls that line low during serial communications and all other
rigs listen in on those commands to see if they should QSY.

Try it.  You'll like it.

The reason that many "cheap" (like me) hams don't want to spend one penny
more than needed is that its a HOBBY and every penny you save can be spent
elsewhere on the hobby.  It is also a pastime where you don't mind spending
an entire weekend fixing up a $50 radio you found for 25 cents at a garage
sale (that is, when you have the time).
