Through the years, I notice that the prices for ICOM accessories are
basically in line with other ham rigs manufacturers such as Yaesu, Kenwood
etc.
Purely from marketing point of view, it is always wise to market the rig at
a lower price and get some 'meat' from the accessories. Similar event
happened in the motor industries, the price of a Mercedes Benz C class is
reasonable but the additional accessories such as alloy wheels, AMG spoiler
and skirting are expenisve.
At the end of the day, hams, i.e. customers, will make their only clever
choices. Here are some examples:
1. The SP-20 is good looking station speaker but expensive. If you do not
need a match with your rigs in appearence, similar audio quality can be
obtained from a much lower priced speaker.
2...CT-17 is expensive. However, if you prefer firing up your soldering
iron, you can make one yourself at far lower price.
3. IC-PW1 is wonderful for me but there are other cheaper alternatives in
the market. This time I decide to keep the PW-1 because I want trouble free
1 kw operation.
In a free market, hams are free to make their own wise purchase decisions.
Whether ICOM accessories are expensive will depend on what you want to
achieve. Good looking? Trouble free operation? Good match? etc etc.
