What kind of audio envelope were you using when you adjusted the pot?
And were you using a scope or PEP meter?

BTW... On air audio reports are not a reliable way to check for
overdrive... The receiver's IF filters sanitize the signal. If you clip
in the finals... It sounds like mild compression, which actually sounds
quite good. That's what the compressor does, but earlier in the IF chain
so that high-order, out of passband distortion products can be removed.

If you were using a complex waveform... Ie voice... And not a single
tone... Ie a whistle... If you are seeing 80W on other than a PEP meter,
it would be extremely unlikely that your rig continues to meet spec.

For comparison's sake...my 781 adjusted for 100W out and using voice
modulation.
Without compression I see about 10-25W on peaks.
With 10db compression I see about 40W on peaks.
On an accurate external PEP meter, I see 100W in both cases.
