Bruce,  I am really digging back into the past, and this may be all wet,
but
seems that I recall that this problem is the result of a fine layer of
corrosion building up on the TR relay contacts. The cause of this is the
negligible amount of current that the contacts carry, thus there is no
mechanism to "burn off" the corrosion as it develops.

Now, I am really digging . . .

I think that Icom or someone came up with a simple mod to pass a small
current through the relay contacts and avoid the problem altogether. I
do
not have my Icom 765 notebook handy or I could look it up for you. If I
can
find this later, I'll put it on the list or perhaps Adam or someone else
recalls the reference and can post the procedure.

I may be completely wrong in suggesting that this is the source of your
problem, yet your description is ringing bells back in the dark recesses
of
what I used to have for a mind.
