My 765 also runs very cool. For those with hot-running 765s, I wonder which
mode(s) seem to be creating the most heat, or is it hot just sitting there
idling in receive mode?
I find it hard to believe that anyone with a properly aligned and working
765 would find the IF shift and notch not up to snuff, particularly when
compared to Kenwoods. I just checked the operation of my notch control
again, and was easily able to null an S9 +10dB CW signal (with the 500 Hz
filter in) down to zero on the S meter.
I have the W2IBT passband tuning mod installed and that allows you use the
passband tuning with the IF shift switch in the "out" position, while
retaining the IF shift function in the "in" position. In either position,
the IF shift control effectively moves the passband, narrowing the bandwidth
as it should. With the passband tuning activated on a very crowded SSB
band, the resultant filter slopes appear to be a bit steeper as off
frequency garbage is down a bit, and the noise floor resulting from nearby
strong signals is considerably less. I've measured the resulting passband
width at various settings of the IF shift control - here are a couple of
samples: USB mode with IF shift set to 1 o-clock- 2.4 KHz at 6 dB down, 2
o'clock- 2.1 KHz at 6 dB down, 3 o'clock- 1.8 KHz at 6 dB down. In CW mode,
using either the SSB filters or cascaded 500 Hz or 250 Hz filters, the IF
Shift again works as it should, with the passband tuning mod producing
advantages similar to those noted for SSB mode.
I don't question the fact that some might not find worth in the ability to
move the filter passband around in this way, but if a given 765 isn't
producing the effects I described when using the IF shift, then something is
wrong with the box. I've owned many Kenwood models, including the 950SDX,
940 and 850 and find the 765's implementation of this feature much more
useable and effective. On the other hand, the passband tuning features of
all these rigs for CW mode falls short of most of the Drake implementations,
including the 2B receiver from the early 60's.

My 765 runs cold such that I've been concerned.

I've found the "IF Shift" to be worthless. However, the notch is very
effective.

There's a lot of stuff which can be quickly found using Google & search
words of IC-765 modifications.
