Subject: [Icom] IC-765

Hi Gang,

Just subscribed to list. Picked up a nice IC-765 at an estate sale
recently. Seems to be a great rig, but have some questions you
owners might help me with:

1) Rig seems to run a little warm at 100W, especially the heat
sink ventilation box at rear. Internal fan comes on OK, but
still little warm for me. Suppose you could remove speaker
from grill in top cover to let some heat out. Tried a desk
fan blowing across the box at rear, but doesn't do much
     good.

Been using my 765 since 1990 and never noticed any excessive heating on CW
or SSB. Fan runs a lot on RTTY, of course, but heat sink not excessively
"hot." I doubt that removing the speaker would improve matters for you since
it your heat sink is getting too hot to touch, there is likely another
problem causing this.

2) The IF Shift and Notch controls seem pretty well worthless.
Any mods to make these controls work like the Kenwoods
I am used to running ?? Web site for mods, info, etc.

This is surprising and makes me think that there is a problem. The IF Shift
works well on the 765 although you are well-advised to do the Passband
Tuning Mod that Adam VA7OJ recommended. My notch filter works quite well
considering that it is analog and not DSP.

3) My first Icom rig - any info related to above or anything to
make this rig run better appreciated.

Check out Adam's webpages for Icom info. Under the Passbands topic, you can
see the 765 IF filter and audio frequency response spectra that I plotted
for the 765 and for the original Icom 756 PRO. He has a wealth of
information on the 765 and just about every other Icom ever used in this
part of the world. "Mr. Icom!"

I presently have the 765, a 756 PRO and a new 756 PRO2 on the desk , and I
would part with the original PRO before I would the 765. It is a grand old
radio!
