Hi Tom,
There may be two separate issues at play here - a failing display and an
intermittent (possibly a cold-soldered joint) in the inverter supplying HV
to the display backlight tube. The inverter transformer L101 can fail.
There is a page describing IC-756 LCD replacement on
http://www.qsl.net/icom/ The LCD display module is a Sanyo part, and should
be available from Icom or from a Sanyo distributor. On the page "Replacing
the IC-756 LCD Display", click "Sanyo" for the LCD package label and
"download" (near the bottom of the page) for a Zip containing information on
the backlight inverter.
Icom America, Icom Europe, Icom Deutschland (in Dusseldorf), Icom UK and
Icom Japan should still have the part. You may need to contact more than one
Icom agency.
Thanks to Mark VK2ZB, here is some data on the inverter transformer L101:
The description of the L101 is:
- Ultra low profile: 5.1mm in thickness for BLC13
5.6mm in thickness for BLC13H
- Suitable for reflow soldering
- Optimal magnetic circuit structure for high efficiency 80% (typical)
- Secondary coil with multi-layer solenoid winding allows high voltage
output
- Separate primary and secondary coil structure for high dielectric strength
and reliability
- Secondary coil has U-shaped terminals, separating lead wire soldering
terminal and soldering terminal to PCB to prevent wire breakage
Cautions:
- Do not clean with trichloroethylene or alcohol-
based solvents.
Hope this is helpful. Best 73,

Subject: [Icom] 756 display + second issue
Gentlemen,
My old faithful '756 (original one) has suddenly developed the infamous
intermittent horizontal dark lines thus the display is starting to have the
well
documented problem. At present, it appears to be more of an irritation, but
nevertheless is disconcerting. Get something new? Sure, but this radio
still
has a lot of life left in it!
Thus, is a replacement display and the accompanying LCD cover (as per VK6HK
article) still available and where? I don't believe this question has been
asked
in the last couple months and things can change rapidly.
The second question is the backlighting of (specifically) the NB button - it
is
intermittent; from all on, all off, or somewhere in between (dirty
contact?).
Any suggestions before I contemplate surgery?
TIA, 73,
Tom - WA2BPE
