Thanks to all that answered my post. Here is what I ended up doing.
Bought an SS-64 made by Communications Specialists, Inc.
Positioned it below the BCD switches placing it at right angles to the
length of the radio.
Took power and ground from the T/T pad header at the end of the flex film.
Now the encoder only gets power on transmit.
Attached the CTCSS output wire to the purple wire near the deviation pot. No
coupling cap needed as the
SS-64 has one in series with the yellow output lead. The gain control also
had enough range that I did not
have to pad it down.
Now have an oldie but goodie that will work our IRLP node.
