Paul,
(and any one else wanting rack handles)
I retired from an aerospace company about one year ago and one of the
items made in the shop where I worked was a small handle that could be
easily used for a rack handle. The company used heavy wall aluminum tubing
(.500 OD X .058 wall) about 6 or 8 inches long. The first bend is 90
degrees and the tangent about 3.0 inches from one end. The second (final)
bend is about 4 or 5 inches from the back tangent of the first bend and with
zero degrees rotation to the plane of the first bend. The ends of the two
bends are then trimmed to be the same length then tapped to accept a screw
internally. I don't remember what tap thread size was used.
If the unit you want to rack mount already has holes for a handle, use
them as a guide for the location of the bends in the handle you make. Also,
a source of small amounts of this size (tube O.D. x wall thickness) of
tubing might be a problem for an individual both in finding a supplier and a
reasonable price.
I know this might add even more tools and equipment to some already well
stocked Ham shacks, but hope it helps those that might be unable to locate
suitable handles in the future.
73 to all,
Jim Good KD5VXH
