Yes, it charges via the wall charger and jack, and does NOT charge when the
radio is placed in a drop-in charger.
The time is shown on page 5 of your manual, under the diagram of the wall
charger - it says 15 hours. The small internal battery won't last very
long in operation.
It is out of the loop when there's an external battery in place. You have
to remove the external battery for the internal battery to work, even if
the external battery is dead. And you have to remove the external pack to
charge the internal battery.
If the internal battery is no good (likely in any of the SAT's today), some
of the aftermarket suppliers have packs in that configuration, and they're
easy to replace. The radio opens "clamshell" style by removing four screws
from the back, and one from the belt-loop ring on the right side.
