[Icom] CT-17 Baud speed change??

George,
Thanks for the input. I will give that a try although the CT-17 paper said
the CT-17 is at 1200Baud com port rate, I can agree with what you are
saying. I will add that while the '56pro had the com setting at "auto" it
would not even talk with the PC but did talk with the amp. Strange. I did
get a very good extensive info on the workload of the PC making the slowdown
for the key up and down. I mean having other programs running in the back
ground slowing the PC reaction times from MIXw. I will try some of that
although the 746 and 46pro didnt have the same problem.
73 and thanks Raul W4AWI (see you on SSTV?)

Raul, the CT-17 is insensitive to data rate or speed. It will work at
whatever rate you set your computer and radio for. I operate my PRO2 at
19,200 bps for example, using MixW and the CT-17 as the interface to the
radio..

The CT-17 is merely a level-changer - it has no data rate functions or
capabilities.'

OK... I definitely won't buy any more...

>As much as I like my PROII, I can no longer recommend Icom radios to
anyone.

It's much better here in Canada... Usually get a live person right away
and parts are usually shipped promptly...

Mind you, one time a part for an older radio was back-ordered... Finally
showed up 9 months later, no-charge, with a letter of apology... I
forgave them... (I had found the part elsewhere in the meantime)...

I am using the CT-17 for the '56pro2 and PW-1. All units and the com port
are set to 1200 baud because the CT-17 interface "IS" on 1200Baud per the
instruction sheet. Can the CT-17 be put on 4800 or 9600 baud to speed up
responses to key/unkey commands from the PC? I use MIXw2.06 and there is a
delay of 1/2 second from the command from the software to the time the radio
is keyed or unkeyed. It varies too. Strange and I have tried various
settings in the PTT/CAT configure in the software. Next thing is to look at
settings in the rig for the digital key/unlkey commands. Any help
appreciated. 73 de W4AWI Raul

Icom parts support has always been great for me. Calls, emails, etc.
Yea,
sometimes you have to wait a few mins, but beats the heck out of the 45
mins
it takes to talk to my cable modem support customer service and I pay
them $50
a month!
With ten 781s and four 765s in the shack here, I buy lots of parts.
Never had to send a radio into Icom yet. The service manuals and the on
line FAQ are
very good.

You should try talking to the other two big radio companies. Their parts
service is really, really bad.

The CT-17 device is nothing more than a level converter switching the=20
RS-232 signals coming from a computer device into the open-collector TTL=20
signal requirement of the Icom gear. The chip inside the CT-17 is a MAX232=
=20
- or one of its cousins - which can probably operate up to baud rates of=20
150 kilobaud.

I suspect the wording of the written material is confusing. Does it say=20
something like "Set the CT-17 interface to 1200 baud"? If so, it means to=20
set the baud rate on the equipment connected to the CT-17 to 1200 baud.

Hi all
I have bought parts from Kenwood east coast transistor with no problem
from either online or on the phone ....Also had no problem with Yaesu,
other than the phone wait. Yaesu is the Best for parts & know there parts
( ask for Sal ) if you don't have the part number ....Most of the time
Yaesu parts are cheaper in price than Parts house's for common items ...And
always way cheaper than Kenwood or Icom.... If I need a part for any
radio... And it not a proprietary part , I call Yaesu .... A lot of the time
they have it for very low price ...But I guess Any company can have an off
day !!!

I've walked into Icom in Bellevue, WA, and I've seen them fix a problem
while you wait. I received a few panel lamps from them at no charge. They
have always been friendly and helpful. Probably costs more to write up bulbs
than it's worth.

Tim you made my day! I thought I would have to go to "radio rehab" but now I
see I'm not nearly as bad as others! 10-781's & 4-765's----you need help
more than me. We were joking the other night on 10 meters about starting a
radio anonymous meeting that would start out like "Hi, I'm Rick, and I can't
pass up a good deal." You must have quite a large shack. My 2 cents! 73,
Rick.

now, ive had good luck with ALL of the parts departments of the big
3....calls answered promptly, parts sent fast, for all of them. icom was a
bit better
as they would often send parts "free" like screws and such. i make a point
of
calling them 1st thing in the am, just after they first open. gotta give
them
time for a cup of coffee and such. corporate america is downsizing the
"customer support" people, as the other post pointed out, so the hi mucky
mucks can
get ehe bonuses and raises. they forget who made the customer support work
in
the first place. the over worked personnel really are doing the best they
can
with what they have.

Anyone have a N-110 photo coupler (used in the 761, PS-35 power supply)
sitting around?
ICOM no longer has them.

Subject: [Icom] Gold Line Mikes
Reply-To: [email protected]

Hi Folks,

I have 4 new Heil Goldline GM 5 mikes, Bob's custom short Icom cables and
desk stands available for sale or trade. I have one GM 4 personally updated
to the 5 by Bob as well as one small short boom mount.

I am looking for only MINT Icom SM 8's with dual cables or SM 20 desk
mikes. I already have plenty of the other series mikes.

Thanks

Hi Jack,

My PS35 is also not working. Why do you need the photo coupler? What is
wrong with your PS35. I am curious to know because I also want to fix up my
PS35 as well.

Over the years, I have always found Icom Bellevue parts support excellent. I
would call them on the 800-number, giving them the part numbers and credit
card info; the parts would generally ship the same day if they were in
stock.

On the one occasion when I ordered parts from Icom Canada, I called in the
order, drove out and collected the parts the same day.

Cheers for now, 73,

Icom parts support has always been great for me. Calls, emails, etc.
Yea,
sometimes you have to wait a few mins, but beats the heck out of the 45
mins
it takes to talk to my cable modem support customer service and I pay
them $50
a month!
With ten 781s and four 765s in the shack here, I buy lots of parts.
Never had to send a radio into Icom yet. The service manuals and the on
line FAQ are
very good.

You should try talking to the other two big radio companies. Their parts
service is really, really bad.

I charge my time out at $90 an hour. I realize that this is chicken feed
for an attorney but would you really send a client an itemized bill with a
charge for $22.50 for 15 minutes of listening to "YOUR CALL IS IMPORTANT,
etc." ?

I will not deny that Icom makes the best performing radios for the amateur
radio service. But I cannot in good conscience recommend Icom radios to
anyone else - especially if they are going to depend on Icom service,
assuming their service response is similar to their parts response.

I got to weigh in.

I quit working on Kenwood radios several years ago then I was holding a
shorted driver transistor in my hand, and the parts guy told me it couldn't
be bad, they never go bad. I told him thanks, and gave the radio back to
the owner unfixed. Have not touched a kenwood since. Won't do it can't
make me!

Yaesu is better, but long waits, and wrong parts once. OTOH, they went out
of their way to get me an obsolete part out of their boneyard once. It took
a while, but I got it.

Icom is the best. In Gulf War-I, my battle-ready 735 blew a filter-pack
diode in a sand storm. Icom parts accepted a collect call from the gulf,
sent the parts for free, and included a box of bazooka bubble gum. I was
back up on MARS in days! I made sure I sent them a thank-you post card from
Iraq. The card hung there many years. That is service!

They are not perfect. But I think you are in for a disappointment if you
think you will get better somewhere else.

OTOH, go ahead and switch. More Icoms for us!
