Hi Tim,
There are (3) aftermarket ROM replacement boards that willl replace the
existing battery-backed RAM Unit in the IC-R71A. Willco Electronics, Roberto
Nardo IK2RND, and PIEXX make these units. After fitting the ROM board, only
the stored user memory channels are held with battery-backed RAM. The
radio's opcode (like the BIOS in a computer) is hard-coded in non-volatile
ROM and will remain intact even with no battery power. The Willco unit also
allows a memory expansion board which can store something like 1024
memories, if you need this.
The Willco and PIEXX units are available direct from the manufacturer in the
U.S. while the IK2RND board can be ordered direct from Roberto in Italy, or
through Scott Malcom at MTS. Scott keeps these boards in stock for U.S.
customers.
I have used all three types of ROM boards in my various Classic ICOM rigs,
and can recommend them all. These boards simply plug in to PCB headers in
the radio. Removal of the old board and installation of the new one, is very
easy.
All three of these can be found with a web search. I have links to them on
my Icomclassic website too, go to www.icomclassic.com and view the "Links"
page.
73, good luck.
