I too vote for the 781 by far over the Pro.
I spent several hours with the Pro, Pro2 and 1000 Mk whatever side by
side and I did not like any of these newer rigs. The noise on the Pro's
has a range that hits me like someone running finger nails down a chalk
board. I can't put my finger on it, but it's a very wearing subtle
white noise that I can't take for more than an hour at a time.
The Yaesu did not have the bothersome noise, but I did not like the QRM
fighting features at all. Easier rig to live with, but not as good
overall as the Pro or Pro2. None of these above rigs come close to the
781 in my opinion in terms of easy listening and nice simple operation.
The differences in performance, I could not tell if there was one. The
781 to me is just as good or better than these other rigs and sounds
400% better in receiver fidelity. Plus, the monochromatic monitor is
MUCH more pleasing than the multicolor screen in my opinion. Not so
busy.

If you take the basic receiver and transmitter specs from the QST
reviews, I
would vote for the 781.
