OK Tim, both the Icom 746Pro and 756Pro have a bandedge lockout. I am
wondering if you are trying to operate on the new band today... The
transmit function is disabled after the "band edge beep" ocurrs. Now,
Icom has a field mod for all freq operation, but the dissemination of
which is limited to MARS/CAP/other authorized users, and you have to fax
them a copy of your licence to operate out of band before they will send
it to you.
I don't know what their position is on the new band, but they were
pretty clear about not giving out the mod openly. Other than that, the
autotune for the antenna works great on anything, provided the antenna
is cut properly. Usually, however, when operating "out of band" you
simply have to use an external antenna tuner, and tune the old-fashioned
way. First, though, hold down the ""MENU" button until you get the
global options menu, scroll to option #19, and set the "Auto Tune" to
"OFF", (one selects this by turning the frequency input knob. This will
lock the antenna autotune out, and prevent an inadvertant case of the
internal tuner fighting the external tuner. I use the 746PRO every day,
on MARS freqs, and have absolutely no problem with either transmit, nor
antenna tuning, once the mods are made. I hesitate, though, to actually
go thru the mod, because of the numbing lecture which I recieved from
Icom about so doing. Frankly, I would call them up, and ask them about
the new band
and their policy.
Otherwise, the 746PRO is a tremendous rig, and I recommend it to anyone.
Frankly, it's the best rig I ever owned (my other rigs are Boatanchors
LOL).....it will make you real lazy, real fast --hi--

Any one know the cause of the problem , any operator error , any way to prevent the problem or just a bad Icom product ? Or is this not a problem and I am just reading
