[Icom] PW1 vs 4KL

I was the person that had the resistor problem. The ARRL explored the
possible problem during their evaluation of the PW1. They were unable =
to
duplicate the problem and I have not had further problems since I =
replaced
the resistor in both of my PW-1's. Although the resistor is technically =
run
over its ratings I now believe that the problem was a manufacturing =
defect
that physically damaged the resistor. I have heard from a couple of =
other
guys with the identical problem and all amps were within fifty or so =
serial
numbers of each other.
Translated: I no longer consider this an issue.

Malcolm,
Been using my PW-1 (version 2) for past 3+ years and think it's great=20
other than the loud fans. However, I do recall two issues raised on=20
this reflector. First, one ham had some experience running RTTY=20
barefoot at 100 watts through his PW-1 only to have a component in the=20
amp fry under marginal SWR. His research indicated that the component=20
was significantly under rated even with the amp off. Not sure how=20
this was resoved or the details. Second, the power supply is integral=20
to the amp. If the PW1 PS fails repair or replacement is expensive. =20
Not sure what the case would be with the 4KL given the PS is a=20
separate unit, but no longer manufactured.
Anyway some thoughts,
