Malcolm - I have many years experience with both. I used the 4KL with the
781 from 1989 until 1999 when I got the PW-1 (version 2) and 756 SOLELY
because of 6 meters. They both performed flawlessly - never had a problem
and I ran then long and hard - about 20K Q's on the 4KL and 13K on the PW-1.
Both are great amps, but some observations: the antenna tuner on the PW-1
does not quite have the range of the 4KL. This was only noticeable
difference when running my stack of Force-12 tribanders (10/15/20) on 12 and
17. The 4KL would never kick out on 12 even with a 3:1 while the PW-1
always did even with 2.6:1 - (yes, same antenna, etc.). That being said,
the PW-1 has 6 meters and it is awesome - that extra power on 6 is a big
plus for me getting to the 128 level on 6. BTW, don't even consider the
first version of the PW-1 since the amp must be turned on even if you want
to run barefoot. If you work 6, the decision is a done deal.

Subject: [Icom] PW1 vs 4KL
I am running a 756PROII and have narrowed my amp choices to a 4KL or a PW1.
The 4KL would obviously be used and I think the PW1 (version 2) would also
be used, so the warranty issue would not be a factor.
That said, I would appreciate hearing from those who have had/used either or
(even better) used both of these amplifiers.
Are parts/repair a significant problem yet for the 4KL ??
As always, thanks in advance for any assistance any of you good folks can
provide.
