If at all possible, I would try to get each of these rigs and try to hook
the up to see how they treat vehicle noise. I don't mean buy them, just go to
a dealer, ham club or helpful locals. If this is not possible the next thing
to consider is "will it fit?". I cut out an actual size ad of the 706 face
and tried various places on the dash of my truck to find just the right spot
for viewing, and most important, safety. Don't forget the cereal boxes we
throw out as these can easily be cut and taped into life size "radios" to
check for fit, especialy helpful when considering the Kenwood. Just look up
the size specs. Copy an ad of the front of the radio from a magazine and
enlarge it to the actual size works well also. Be sure to check mic cord
location also. I chose the Icom and have had the MKII and the "G" versions
and love them. I have more Icom rigs than any other and have always been
happy with their value and quality. I hope these suggestions give you some
help in selecting the "right" radio. OBTW the Icom has two mic jacks which
will let you use a headset in one jack and wire up a footswitch to the other
to make handsfree radioing while driving, a big plus in the safety dept.
Good Luck!. Rick K8DXN.
