Don,
your need for such a datalink is genuine so, knowing this will be completely
misunderstood by some on the reflector and exagerated by others I will offer
this first look at Icom's EXPERIMENTAL 1.2Ghz voice/data software difined radio
(SDR) system known as D-STAR http://www.tapr.org/tapr/dv/DStar%20brochure.pdf.
Please understand this is a concept project ONLY and it is only being
experimented with in Japan. Icom America in Washington State is not involved
with this project so calling them for more info will be useless. Please read the
conceptual brochure and be assured that soon enough we may see your idea
realized very soon.
As far as your internet speed problem, if you want to try and link to your
office T3 there are many milliwave and microwave wireless modem systems
available now for just such an application. I've seen rackmount units with
external antennas working LOS for a few miles on a fraction of a watt however,
multiple layers of excryption and firewalls are needed for security against
intrusion. Even with D-STAR such precautions would be necessary.
Stay warm,
Gary
