I sent Roland a link but I guess I should recommend this to all:
I have had very good success with the converter from G3VGR's plans:
http://www.g3vgr.co.uk/civ.htm
This is a computer to one radio interface, but I have successfully made it
work with two rigs at once by putting it into a 1/8" mini-plug splitter.
This lets the computer talk to either or both rigs as well as the rigs talk
to each other. Even though the Icom box interface has all the electronics
inside it, the communications still work if you have this sort of interface
plugging into a 5 way ganged box with nothing more than 1/8" connectors all
tied together tip to tip and body to body.
It is very forgiving of component selection and works flawlessly. The only
skill needed is some planning in placement of the parts if you want it all
to fit inside a DB-9 shell. If you bring the RS-232 signals to a little box
and put these parts into it, you can parallel up the "tip" and "body" lines
to multiple outputs and you'll have a copy of the Icom interface without
needing a power supply.
After trial and error with the first interface I made, I've made about a
half dozen of these for myself and others (mostly trading favors or swapping
for ham stuff). The most important aspect of constructing it is to make
sure you wire it up properly and to have the computer and rig configured
correctly.
If anyone wants advice on this or help in building one, let me know offline
and I'll be happy to answer any questions.
