[Icom] Icom 746 Pro VS 275H

I also agree that the 275H has a superior receiver compared to the
ic-746. I have no experience with the IC-746PRO. I do run a 756 PROII.
The difference between the 275H and 746 is measured here on a cavity
switch. The antenna is m2 18 element on 39 foot boom up 80 feet. 7/8ths,
preamp in the shack (this is lightning country here!)
I believe the difference has to do with the vastly different schemes at
work in the 275 vs the 746.
The 275 being a single band rig, is not beset with the compromises
necessary to get 160- 2meters.
Its measured, in my experience, in noise. The 275H is just a quieter
receiver. In my experience, I wouldn't miss a signal on the 746 (which I
still am proud to own), but it seemed like the 275 had the edge when you
dump the agc and turn the rf gain down, and looked for signals in the
noise.
I am most interested to hear about the performance of the 746PRO on two
meters, especially if there are folks with 746 and 275 experience out
there.
Now, not to open another hornet's nest. But I find my ic-910H is
superior to the 275H...I really miss real metering, and menus to have
more control over the rig, but appreciate the big bang for the buck with
the 910h. There are 1.2 GHz modules out there dirt cheap.
Can't wait for the next generation ICOM satellite weak signal radio.
Where is that DSP radio for satellites and weak signals ICOM???

Hi Duane,.

IC275H was a nice little mono band rig. I am sure what IC746pro heard
can
also be heard by IC275H. Whether the small rig is better will depend on
how
much operation flexibility you want. I do not own them but I have
chances
to play both for more than 6 six months. I would say IC275H is nothing
inferior but I would choose IC746pro for variety of operation
flexibility.

I have recently been advised by ICOM Japan that spare parts for ICX75
series
become less and less stocked. Like keeping antique cars, classic rigs
always have the problems of spare parts shortage.

I shall also be pleased to see other Group members' views on this topic.
