[Icom] Icom 746 Pro VS 275H

I am using the Icom 746 Pro for two meter operation. My former rig was the
275H.
Now maybe it is I, but I do believe that the 275H has a superior receive
capability.
I checked the SWR on the Hustler 7G-144 vertical, just to be sure something had
not changed, and it was still 1.2:1 I had the rx amp off on both rigs.
The rf gain was at 11 o'clock on the 746 Pro and about three quarters open on
the 275H. I was operating FM simplex.
I received excellent signal and audio reports with both rigs. But as I listened
to the stations I could hear some crackling on the weaker ones. The signal
strength was from S2-S4, the stronger stations were fine. Yet when I switched
over to the 275H, I did not hear the background noise. Being totally blind, and
the 275H not having an audio feed of signal strength to the speech synthesizer
as the 746 Prro does, I do not know the exact S-meter level. However, I do know
the signal sounded stronger and that there was certainly less, if any,
background noise.
The question is: is the Icom 275H all mode transciever simply better on two
meters than the 746 Pro?
Thank you for your collective wisdom.
