Hi Tom,
Again, I do not want to start a war here. Although I am not a radio man by
profession, I have a feeling that the design for HF and VHF/UHF radio is
different. We look for good selectivity in HF so that we can pull out weak
DX signal from the crowded band segment. On the other hand, in the V/U
region, the frequency spectrum available is much wider. High sensitivity
and low noise front end is more important. The requirement on selectivity
is comparatively less.
To maintain both good selectivity and sensitivity in an all-round rig (also
have to be at a marketable price) to suit the requirement of different band
segment, the design of the rig must have to make compromise. That is the
reason why TS2000 is jack of all trade but none is good - TS2000 supporter
please hold your fire.
As said by Adam AB4OJ, the band scope is a mini-spectrum analyser. It is
not only useful in monitoring the band but also can be used as a good repair
tool for minor radio works. I wrote an article in the IC756 yahoo group
about the alternative use of IC756. The topic is 'alternative use of
IC756'.
If you wish to learn the other side of the story, you may wish to:
1. read the product review report from ARRL;
2. read the message in the mail reflector of ICOM and Kenwood;
3. read the product review in the www.eham.net - carefully ! some of them
are just too subjective.
