When you touch a short wire or something to either
side of the diode, and the rig switches from hardly
working to full power, something is being triggered
from state to another. Something is on the verge of
working, but not quite right. Now, perhaps the RF
signal you introduce into the circuit with the short
wire or whatever reacts with the diode and causes a
slight DC level change on one or both sides of the
diode. I would try to get a Hi-Z probe with a 2.5
MH RF choke on it, and try to measure the voltages
on the diode before and after, while hardly working
and at full power. Yes, the little wire etc intercepts
enough RF to do that. Even if it's ambient in the shop.
