[Icom] IC7800 replaces IC781???

Guess we look at things a little differently, John.
What a person "needs" in a radio depends upon what he uses it for. Lots of
the old timers you find every night on 75 are still using the same FT-101
they bought in the 70's and still getting the job done for them. The guy who
is chasing DX or doing some serious contesting is in a whole different
environment, and his needs usually dictate the best available equipment
within his financial reach.
Ten years ago I was using an IC-765 and thought it was the top of the line
in performance. Used every feature on it and was glad to have them. Did it
perform better than I "needed?" At the time I didn't think so . . .
Now I use a PRO2 and same story. I still do about the same operating as ten
years ago, although more QRP CW contesting these days, but conditions are
much tougher now and will be in the coming few years as the sunspots slowly
sink in the West. I use every feature on the PRO2 and am glad that it is
there. Does it perform better than I need? Well, sometimes yes but most of
the time when the going gets tough, I find that it is a good match for
requirements.
When the 7800 or whatever they call it comes out, I will consider getting
one if (a) I can afford to and (b) its performance improvement merits it.
Will I "need" it? Probably not - but neither do I need a car when a bicycle
would haul me around town just as well most of the time.
I don't feel that I need the latest and greatest radio just for bragging -
although I take pride in my radio gear. My motivation is that I enjoy good
equipment, learning about it and then using it to the best of my ability.
Hold good thoughts and stay well!
