Here's yet another trick.  A clear, high-output, LED.  The one I use is 3.1 
volts and 20mA (max).  I have them installed in a scanner that was eating 
lamps annually.  A series resistor limits the current to 10mA, produces 
adequate light, and has been in use for over two years.
