Hi Pete,

I've looked at several possibilities and the best alternative so far appears 
to be a Pre-Amp optimized for MW frequencies.  Advanced Receiver Research 
[http://www.advancedreceiver.com] in CT makes several interesting models.  
The company was started by several hams and they serve the amateur, 
commercial & military markets.  (I have no vested interest in the Co.)
