Gareth,
As I mentioned in a previous e-mail to you, I checked the eHam reviews on
the IC-701. The PS-701 delivers 17.5V (nominal) to the transmitter PA, and
contains regulators for the low-level stages. The PA requires the higher
voltage to deliver 100W output. The 17.5V output may be unregulated, in
which case 18.6V no-load would be within expectations.
Did you receive a manual and schematics with the radio?
Cheers for now, 73,
Adam VA7OJ/AB4OJ

My PS-701 power supply, of course, doesn't put out anything like the 13.8
volts that is stamped on the back panel. Its more like 18.6. Most sources
suggest not using it with the IC-701, which is wise, but is there a mod
anyone knows of to add a regulator circuit to the power supply or is there a
way turn down the voltage output? It would be a shame to junk it or let it
sit idle if there was a relatively easy way to regulate it.
Thanks and 73
