I have an IC-738. Also the manual. Question: How much did you
have to pay for your IC-738? Although I used mine for three or
four years, mostly on USAF MARS, it has two problems. It was
sent out for repairs twice to no avail. First, the Pre-Amp is
stuck either On or Off. It won't change state even though the
little lamp on the PreAmp button comes on and off. Chicago Radio
fixed that once, but it broke again in about a week. There is
an unusual amount of electronics between the button and the
pre-amp itself... Second, The automatic antenna tuner does not
work. I didn't know that until Chicago Radio brought it to my
attention because I always use my ICOM AH-2 and AH-4 antenna
tuners. Anyway, Chicago Radio said they couldn't fix it, and that
ICOM would charge an arm and a leg for the chips. I didn't pursue
that because I don't really need a built-in tuner. That radio
has been the star performer at two Field Days here. If I sell it
locally I have no ideaq what to ask.
I can copy the manual for you. It'll cost you the postage, and
how many beers I can drink while copying 62 pages. I have my
own copier here. And, the manual covers both the IC-736 and the
IC-738. The 736 has 6 Meters. Now you can look for a 736 book.
Do you want to sell your 738, if the PreAmp and built-in antenna
tuner works, that is....
Here is some info I am reading from page 53 and paraphrasing:
The only option filters are for narrow CW. If you want only ONE
filter the FL-52A 500 Hz -6dB 455KHz 3d IF, or the FL-53A 250 Hz
-6 dB 455 KHz 3d IF. These filters have to be installed in the
proper direction (?).
If you want TWO filters the FL-52A can be augmented with a FL-100
500 Kz -6 dB 9.0106 MHz 2 IF, or the FL-53A can be augmented with
a FL-101 250 Hz -6 dB 9.0106 MHz 2d IF. These two filters will
work any way you can plug them in.
After the filters are plugged in, power up and select the filters
in the SET mode. Unless this is done properly the signal won't
get routed through the filters no matter what you do.
