Ken,

Heck, it's hard enough to replace the volume and squelch pots! I still say 
there's a little dead Japanese fellow in there somewhere.

If the LCD display is the problem (defective segments), I suspect the only 
solution is a new display. But, where are you going to get one other than 
from a "dead" radio?

You could use an outboard frequency counter to display your transmit 
frequency . . .

Then again, it might be time for a new rig or two!
