The Icom R 8500 is a good receiver but for program listening that has
interference etc., the Drake, has synchronious AM and is much prefered for
SWL especially since the Icom costs more than the Drake. If you do not need
a 30-2000 Mhz scanner, get the Icom R 75 for much less money. The Drake does
not have DSP, but is one sweet sounding rig for SWLing, and does dx,
utilities and SSB very, very well. The Drake is rated 5 stars and the Icom
8500 4 stars by "Passport to World Band Radio". The Icom case is more
professional looking but the Drake sounds better over all for program
listening. If you do not need ssb scanning, it would be cheaper to get the
R75 and buy a Uniden base scanner as an alternative. I have listened to them
all and have used the Drake R8, R8A and finally upgraded to the Drake R8B a
couple of years ago. The Icom looks better, but the Drake sounds better.
Passport to world band radio even rates the Drake higher buy a 1/2 star than
the DSP Japan Radio NRD-545 for the money and over all ability.

I hope that helps.

Chuck
