You're right, Adam. I began using the AH-2 with a 1:1 balun and
a open wire line to a 90' dipole when the AH-2's first became
available. I don't recommend 4:1 baluns. Now I use three AH-4's
and one is in the mail. One of the AH-2's got hit by lightening,
but the relays are available, (or were), from Radio Shack. Back
then ICOM was designing for military and quasi-military users, and
their AH-2 appeared to be aimed at marine use. I think the IC-735
was the first ham radio I saw them on, and that was after market.
One unadvertised goodie; the control leads for the capacitors and
inductances are brought on a connector. They can be used to
slave a bank of physically larger, but the same value, inductors
and capacitors. First, tune the antenna with the AH-* tuner; then
transfer the values to the larger inductor/capacitor bank. This
method saves the switches in the larger tuner from being whacked
around during tuning. Also, the AH-2 holds the configuration
as long as 13V power is on. So, I use a seperate power supply.
I can tune the antenna with the IC-738 or the IC-756 ProII, then
switch the antenna coax over to a third radio set to the same
frequency which does not have a auto-tune capability.
