The little external device uses the ALC lead to adjust the
carrier level to some predetermined value during tuning.  
The one I built for my TS-940 also keyes the carrier on.
If the transceiver has a built-in tuner the odds are that
its "tune" lead will also control the frequency of the
carrier so that it is the indicated dial frequency, and
will not annoy others on a SSB net.    73  Clete
