George, Bill,

Just got done looking through the IC-706MKIIG service manual. Neither the
SWR meter description on p. 3-6, nor the reflectometer schematic on p.
10-7, nor the SWR meter set-up procedure on p. 4-10 give any inkling of the
30W requirement. Perhaps one could connect an accurate external power meter
(e.g. Bird 43) with a 50-ohm resistive load, and try various power levels in
the range 1 ~ 30W.

The IC-706MkIIG user and service manuals are now downloadable from the Icom
FAQ site.

Thanks for the detailed response, Bill - sorry if I came across as
sounding like I was doubting your word, but this is just something
really new to me. No demo required!  <:}

Very curious that so much output power would be required for a valid
reading but perhaps our friend Adam, VA7OJ, can fill in the blanks.
