Well, the first thing to do is learn how to use the TPBT
(Twin Pass Band Tuning). You may find that you do not need
any more filters. If the TPBT isn't good enough for you,
decide why. Rejection? Bandwidth? Convenience? Ringing?
Once you figure out what you want/need, then you'll be in a
better position to understand your compromises.

Using an Icom FL-44a or an Inrad 109 in the 455Khz IF slot will
improve rejection without changing bandwidth.

Using an Inrad 314, an Icom FL-222, or an Inrad 322 in the
455Khz IF slot will both improve rejection and narrow bandwidth.

Using an Inrad 110, an Icom FL-223, or an Inrad 320 in one of
the 9Mhs IF slots narrow the bandwidth.

TPBT is still active with any optional filters you installed.

There are several pages of more detailed information on this
and related topics in the IC-746 FAQ located at one of:

} Hi
} I need some help on selecting some filters for the 746. since we have 2 slots at 9mhz and 1 at 455, out of the filter offering from icom, what would be the most effective picks. I do not plan to use the rig on CW, only ssb and am once in a while. I looked at the filter slopes on another web site, was not very informative. I guess I would like real world info and since the price of icom or inrad is a lot, want to try to avoid making bad selections.
} Any help would be appreciated.
