Well, I don't have the schematic, but you may want to let the rig
get very cold. then turn it on.  Make some measurements before it
has a chance to warm up.  Then wait for it to do something unusual.
Then make the measurements again.  That may tell you something.
Include measuring across the Zeners (both directions) in your list
of things to look at.  You can get a closer feel for where the whine
is coming from by listening through a empy toilet paper spool, or a
1/2 inch rubber hose.  Unless you have a stethoscope, of course...
