No, I have never used one of these external relays. I sure will now.
I had no idea the inboard relays  were so fragile /temperamental.
Using first a IC-726 for 6 years and then a 756 since 1998 (same amp
for both rigs- AL80B), I have never had any sort of problem until
this past weekend. At first I thought the 12vdc in the AL-80B had
gone south. I pulled the cover and checked it out - all was ok.
Sooo, I pulled the 756 off line and inserted the 726. Presto! The
amp keyed just fine. Clearly the problem is with the inboard relay
on the 756.
