I suggest that you tune the antenna on the car or something closer to the=
ground and then take it to the top of the motor home and check it - bet =
it won't change at all or, at least very little. Also beg, borrow or stea=
l one of the antenna analizers (MFJ259B or similar) and finally use one o=
f the inducti match (or similar) coils or one of the capacitor switchboxe=
s on, at least, the 80 and 40 bands or on all of them - if not, on 80 you=
probably will be trying to match an ohm or less - I think how much movem=
ent depends on the antenna and the band but I think you can move 1/4 inch=
without too much worry - also If you want use an auto tuner to make the =
antenna a little more broadbanded, but get the antenna reasonant at the m=
ost used freq. The antenna will work better if it is right (rather than c=
lose) and the tuner is really just fooling the rig, but it will help you =
because the rig will not reduce its power because of high SWR.
Good Luck & 73

New ham here with question that I hope wont bore the group. Have a 718 th=
at
I want to mount in the old motorhome for vacation. (would like a 706 but
gotta wait) In anycase, bought a set of ham sticks and trying to get them
tuned is a bear. The instructions say put 4 inches of stinger in stick an=
d
start adjusting from there. How much movement is prudent per adjustment. =
1/8
in?? 1/4 in?? or more. Getting tired of climbing on the rig. How about us=
ing
a tuner once it gets close??
