Walt,
From what I have been hearing, setting the switch to "W" increases the
low-frequency response more than the high-frequency response. The end result is
a "muddy" sound.
To quote an earlier posting by Bill, W9NHQ:
"Yes, the switch is present on later versions, but changing it from N to
W seems to increase the chances for unwanted distortion, in addition to
widening the transmit signal by about 200 Hz. I measured additional
response in both lows and highs of about 100 Hz at either end, but
returned my switch to N after testing."
For casual operating, the IC-756 will sound very good with an HC-5 element.

Subject: [Icom] IC-756-Classic in "Wide SSB" + HC-4
Hi all,
Did anybody try to put the 756 into the "Wide" SSB mode (remember the
half-hidden switch in later SNs) and use the Heil HC-4 mike? If so, how it
sounds like?
I'd like to play with the "broadcast" sound with other mikes but do not want
anything to affect the DX and Contest sound of the HC-4.
Thanks and 73,
"Walt", EU1SA
