Hello John,
I have the IC-740 with the FM board and filters in both i.f's. I find
this rigs'
receiver comparable to aYaesu FT-102 with both narrow filters, that i
had
years ago. The 740 is quite sensitive, does not overload easily, and
with the
filters and passband tuning i can pull out the weak signals next to the
contesters running a kw. Although the 740 is a ham bands only rig, the
synthesizer is
extremely quiet (quieter that the 751A). I purchased this rig to
replace a new
IC-706 MKII. I had the high stability oscillator in the 706, as well as
the
1.9 SSB filter. I would have to say that i find the 706 to be inferior
to even the
IC-730 that i use mobile. Oh yes, the noise blanker on the 740 actually
works,
it has an off, normal, and wide position and has a level adjustment.
The agc is
continuously adjustable and has an off position. There is a multi-point
connector on
the back to hook up external keying, input and output, etc.
Good luck on your decision and 73 - Paul
