[Icom] 746 vs 746 Pro...?

I had a similar problem some weeks ago when I decided to buy one of the
remaining IC-756PRO transceivers at a local dealer. Since I am close to this
stocking dealer, I was able to listen to the 756PRO, the 746PRO, and the 746.
Frankly, I had a hard time -- for my kind of operation -- seeing any
advantage to the 756PRO or the 746PRO. In fact, I found the "sound" of the
746 better than both. Maybe this is as mysterious as fellows who prefer tube
audio amplifiers to solid state -- I just know what I heard. Perhaps some of
the DSP technology just has not really "arrived," yet.

In the end, I saved the money and went with a new IC-746 (original) radio. It
does not equal my FT-1000MP but then it did not cost as much and adds six and
two meters. I just know that to me it had everything the "two PRO's" had and
perhaps more in its own way.

way to put the question is "is there a reason to buy a 746
 in preference to a 746 Pro?" >>
