The "secret" to hearing the exceptional audio that the PRO *can* produce is
to go either of two ways:

1. take the receive audio from the ACC1 connector on the rear panel and run
it through a small amplifier to as large a speaker system as you can
provide. This provides the best available audio output.

2. connect the largest speaker you can provide to the Speaker output on the
rear panel. This is the second-best approach.

Either of these is far superior to the little internal speaker or even to
the SP-20 and SP-21 Icom speakers. I initially used my SP-20 when I first
got the PRO and was impressed with how much better it sounded than my 765
using the same speaker. But when I took the audio from ACC1 and ran it into
an old stereo receiver/amp into a large stereo speaker cabinet with some
very old but still very good speakers, then for the first time I really
could hear what the PRO could do.

Any judgements as to audio quality of any radio using the small internal
speakers can be pretty far off base. It takes a large, decent speaker to
reproduce the frequency range the PRO can produce, especially from ACC1.
That range, incidently, is essentially from zero Hz to over 3600 Hz.

A final somewhat negative comment: the analog internal audio output system
in the PRO is "alright" but it is noisy and distorted compared to the
signal obtained from ACC1. For routine ham operations, the sound is
adequate, but for really enjoyable listening, especially to the
higher-quality SSB stations and SWBC AM stations, an external amp/speaker
operated by the ACC1 output is the way to go.
