It sounds like either you were aiming at the wrong target, or just shot down
the wrong bird.
The 847 is a different animal from either the FT100 or the 706.  The band
coverage is similar, but if you wanted a compact mobile TRX, the 847 ain't
it.  On the other hand if you wanted better laid out buttons and not having
to scroll through countless menus to access the feature you want for use as
a base unit, the 706 and 100D should have never been considered.

If you really want a base unit, the  FT847 should make you very happy.

Thanks to all who replied.  After reading many reviews and reading
everybody's opinion, I decided to upgrade a little bit and get an
FT-847.  Again, thanks for responding.
